Atlanta, GA, March 17, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned an attack against a Jewish fraternity house at Vanderbilt University, where swastikas were spray-painted in the fraternity’s elevator. ADL called the incident “a despicable and cowardly act” and praised university officials for their clear stand against anti-Semitism.

The attack on the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house, a historically Jewish fraternity, took place over this past weekend.

Mark Moskowitz, ADL Southeast Regional Director, issued the following statement:

Early Saturday morning, our community awoke to the news that a historically Jewish fraternity on the campus of Vanderbilt University was targeted for a despicable and cowardly act of anti-Semitism.

We know this abhorrent act does not reflect the values of the university. We deeply appreciate and praise the clear stand against anti-Semitism articulated by Vanderbilt Provost Susan Wente, who made clear in her letter to the community that this kind of behavior is clearly unacceptable and an offense against the entire university. We wholeheartedly concur, and stand in solidarity with the campus community as it stands up to those who would spread hatred, bigotry, anti-Semitism, and fear on campus.  It is important that the Vanderbilt police are investigating this matter and will pursue this to the full extent of the law. We know the University will continue to stand up against all forms of hate and will actively support those student leaders who are committed to creating a campus that is safe, welcoming and inclusive for all students.”

We echo Provost Wente’s clear rejection of anti-Semitism as “the university condemns the reprehensible depiction of this symbol that since the time of Nazi Germany has come to be associated with hate, anti-Semitism, violence, death, and murder.” We are heartened by the support of the university administration, campus police and student campus leaders. We encourage all people of good faith in the community to condemn this hateful action.

In addition, ADL has resources and materials that can assist to create a climate of respect on college campuses and encourage students to stand up as allies for the targeted students, including the League’s guide to “Responding to Bigotry and Intergroup Strife on Campus.”
