No Place for Hate® is an initiative of the Anti-Defamation League offered free to schools. With public displays of hate on the rise, it is more important than ever for schools to commit to programs that clearly define expectations in behavior for all members of the community. Whether you are a student, educator, or family member, you have a role to play in combating bias and bullying as a means to stop the escalation of hate.

The initiative is designed to rally the entire school around the goal of creating a welcoming community committed to stopping all forms of bias and bullying. No Place For Hate® provides a unique framework to incorporate new and existing programs with one consistent message. No Place For Hate® can help your school foster a culture of respect and create a safe, bully-free learning environment for students at all grade levels.

No Place for Hate® is embraced by the public, private and parochial schools across the country because bullying and bias are an unhappy reality in most schools today and pose a threat to the safe learning environment school officials know is essential for students to succeed. The campaign has the added benefit of preparing young people to live and work successfully in our pluralistic nation and global community. Corporate leaders understand that this cultural competency increases the productivity and effectiveness of all staff.

During the 2022-2023 School Year, 185 schools earned their No Place For Hate® designation in the Southeast region, giving an enormous amount of positive feedback. Schools are noticing a real impact on their school climate. When asked what the impact of No Place For Hate on your school has been, one counselor stated “The indirect impact of NPFH happens through the conversations that carry over to family and friends outside of our school community. These valuable lessons begin to positively impact not just our students but the community-at-large thus creating a ripple effect of open-mindedness and acceptance.

For further guidance and instructions on No Place for Hate best practices, ADL has launched a self-guided training video. You can watch the video here and refer back to it as needed.

1. Form a committee with student leadership to oversee activities in your school.
Suggested committee members (in addition to required students) include faculty, staff members, administrators, family members, and community or business partners. Committees are often called “No Place for Hate® Clubs” and serve as an umbrella organization. For student members, make sure they represent various social groups and networks! Click Here to learn more about forming a No Place for Hate Committee.

2. Adopt and Sign the No Place for Hate® Pledge
Organize an official presentation of the No Place for Hate® Pledge to begin the program. This can be done as part of a larger program, during a school assembly or pep rally or through individual classroom projects. Display a “giant” version of the pledge in a prominent area of your school and encourage family members, students, teachers and others to sign it.  Have teachers post copies in their classrooms for all of their students to sign.  Signing the Pledge does not count as an activity.

3. Submit Proposals for at least three activities by November 17, 2023.
Submit proposals for activities you plan to execute during the school year. You MUST submit the 3 proposal forms to have your activities reviewed and approved. Please email us if you need assistance.

You can find ideas for pre-approved activities in our No Place for Hate online or be creative and design your own activity consistent with the No Place for Hate message. Feel free to continue existing projects or programs, as long as you explicitly connect them to No Place For Hate®. Please review the Activity Guidelines before submitting your proposal.

4. Complete a minimum of three activities during the school year that align with the mission of No Place for Hate®.
Projects should be tailored to meet the needs of your school and impact the majority of your student body. When each project is complete, collect supplemental materials (press releases, articles, photos, videos, etc.) along with a very brief project description and upload them to Canvas to complete your activity forms.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have completed all activities and ADL will officially designate your school No Place for Hate®
Newly designated schools will receive a digital No Place for Hate banner immediately after designation and a physical No Place For Hate® banner at the beginning of the following school year.
